June 3, 2010 at the WSCC Office Presentation on the Wetlands on the North West Corner of the Salton Sea by D. Livesay

The Desert Cahuilla Wetland, an 85-acre, approximately $3 million project that's nearly a decade in the making.

The project was brought to life by tribal wetlands director Debi Livesay, who not only designed and directed implementation of the wetland but secured grant funds from the state and federal agencies including the Bureau of Reclamation, Environmental Protection Agency and Fish and Wildlife Service.

The project features seven wetland “treatment cells,” each about an acre in size. The shallow cells take in fresh water from the Whitewater River storm channel.

The natural diversity between the cells — laid out right next to each other — is surprising. Some feature willow trees, approaching 20 feet tall after just a few years of growth. In another cell, cottonwoods have taken root. Another has many cattails. Another, bulrushes and reeds.

Presentation starts Promptly at 6PM refreshments served.
